Overview I got interested in stem cells after hearing about how much they can help people. They have been in the news for years. These cells can possibly cure thought to be incurable diseases. They can help spinal injuries, cancer, and more. Although I have no personal experience, I do know of people who have been impacted and after years of struggling with their diseases have passed away from Parkinson’s and cancer, both which possibly could be cured with stem cells. There are many reasons why people are against stem cell treatments. Some argue the pro-life, anti-abortion movement and the killing of embryos. However, there are new ways to re-program adult stem cells into the correct type of stem cells. Others argue the cost of the procedures. …show more content…

Embryonic stem cells are easier to modify than adult stem cells (Kuhn). Because they are harvested shortly after conception, they are easier to grow.
Many states have legislation in place that follows three main ideas: prohibiting human cloning, regarding cloning that includes research and regarding research on embryos and fetuses that may affect the performance of the research (Acosta). President Bush vetoed a bill in 2006 that would expand Embryonic Stem Cell Research. As of now, the only stem cells that are allowed for research are those that have already been destroyed (Acosta).
Many believe that stem cells research is an ethical question that should be put to rest along with the treatment of incurable or untreatable diseases, because it is an attempt to play God. However, the ability to find cures and treatments for diseases and genetic conditions that have been deemed untreatable is a chance to allow for an overall improvement in our standard of living for those in the United States as well as around the world. The price of these treatments may be high and deemed experimental and controversial, however, it truly is an area where the positives outweigh the
