After attending a group meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) for a different class, I concluded it is incredibly important to utilize a sense of spirituality. However, it is also very important to make sure it is separate from religion. Especially when considering group meetings. Although religion and spirituality are similar in many ways. Religion is more so a community based faith of worships and beliefs. Whereas spirituality is more of a personal perspective/faith in one’s own wellbeing and the potential within themselves. In other words, Religion can be a societal belief in how an individual should be. Whereas spirituality is how an individual believes they themselves should be. Religion is an easy way for counselors to learn about an individual and understand why they behave certain ways, view things in certain ways. Counselors do not have to accept the individual’s religion but must have an understanding of them (Gerig, 2014). However, even though religion in a group therapy environment should be respected and understood. It should not be applied to the treatments themselves when in a group which may have different religions. Because in many ways, treatments may not work for some as they do for others simply because of the different religious beliefs. I do believe spirituality can be applied to almost anything really. Because it is the individuals own belief within themselves. It is up to the counselor to help an individual realize their own spirituality and strengthen their own wellbeing. In other words, spirituality can be defined as one’s own potential for themselves, within themselves and a view of how they themselves believe they should be as an individual, without the constant worry of societies rules and
