Farmers were angry about the varying railroad rates. In order to obtain profit from their crops, farmers often went to railroads to have their crops shipped to stores and other businesses. People who ran the railroad businesses would often take advantage of the farmers and charged them extremely high fees for having their crops transported. In other words, they could charge them any price they wanted and get away with it 100% of the time. Farmers were fed up with the way the government was handling this issue (which was by doing nothing) and so they demanded that the government take control of all the railroad businesses and other things.

Told through a lens of constant hardship, the book follows their arduous journey towards a coast in order to survive the winter. Throughout the novel, McCarthy shows that having hope enables people to persevere in dire circumstances because it counteracts the possibility of negative outcomes. First, the woman’s monologue about her death displays the despair necessary to abandon all hope.

" One third of greasers are likely to die from a smoking-related disease since they start smoking at least a pack a day at such a young age. Smoking plays a very big part in the novel as a status symbol; the poorer greasers all smoke and normalize it among themselves, but the wealthier Socs do not smoke at all.
In this essay I will be discussing the “smoke“ and what it stands for as a symbol in the Lord of the Flies. I’ll explain how the smoke symbol changes and connects with society and the storyline of the book. The smoke stands for what separates the boys from beasts and it is the hope for of rescue from becoming entirely beasts. I think the smoke is a more overlooked symbol than other more obvious symbols like one of the main characters Piggy and his glasses. However the smoke changes in significant meaningful ways which could be seen as parallels of basic human instincts.
In the elevator he meets these people and remembers their stories, which starts to make him question his thoughts. He starts to doubt himself and his intentions on getting revenge. The smoke that starts to form in the elevator symbolizes this, it symbolizes his uncertainty and confusion. I personally couldn’t imagine having something like this happen and being put into that sort of situation. But looking at statistics it shows that happens quite often.
