The bell rang, I quickly packed up and left the classroom. An ocean of students flowed down the hall, I joined in, hoping to get to class early. I soon realised I couldn’t. The hallways were blocked by students with heads craned downwards, taking small, shuffling steps so they could text, comment, and post in the time it took to get to their next class. As a result, I got to my class just seconds before the bell rang. Every time I walked the hallway between classes, it was the same. The halls were filled with the selfish, unaware, disrespectful behavior of students who were shaped by the American values exhibited by a disease known as social media. This restricts us from saying what must be said in order to speak up for ourselves or others. It can be applied to virtually any situation, but when someone fails to stand up for what is right; the results can be disastrous. One example is when I was in Elementary school. A girl bullied me into doing things for her through manipulation and exploitation. If I had the gall to stand up for myself, and speak up. This never would have continued past the first day she did it. But I was too nice, and let it pass. I never spoke up about it, never attempted to conquer the feeling of hopelessness and the milquetoast inside of me- when I should have. Had I spoken up, things would have obviously been different. The values of the old American society versus that of today has drastically changed. Social media’s hazards of bullying, milquetoast, and a general lack of respect for others has hurt many, some to the point of suicide. The constant lure of attention and being heard has distracted youth into being like everyone else they see on social media. Instead of speaking out for what is right, defending those being bullied, and showing respect toward others, many simply go along with the majority. Although I will remain committed to doing what is right, I recognize that often, I will stand alone. Hopefully, when others see that being kind, supportive, and respectful gains the same amount of attention, they too, will change their behavior and shine enough light on America to chase that negative shadow
