God’s Not Dead is a 2014 film that tells the story of a college freshman taking an introductory philosophy course where his faith becomes under attack by a militantly atheist professor. When the professor asks Josh, the protagonist, to write “God is dead” on a piece of paper in order to skip through the most difficult part of the lecture, Josh refuses because he is willing to stand for his faith. The professor then challenges Josh to a debate after every class period and it is compromised that the students will decide who the winner of the debate is. If Josh loses, he fails the class, therefore losing his hopes of going to law school. The film has a good message of standing up for what you believe in even when everything is against you, but unfortunately is flawed in several ways. The first example is the Asian character that excels in school and has a harsh father who apparently lives in the back of a limousine. Another example is the Arab girl, whose strict father teaches her to live her life according to the principles of Islam. He forbids her from removing her hijab in public, picks up and drops her off every day to college, and severely punishes her and throws her out of his home when he finds out she has been listening to Christian podcasts. The final example is that of the liberal commentator. She is extremely selfish, has several bumper stickers on the back of her car that show her liberal views, and has a rich yuppie boyfriend who cares little about her. When she learns she has cancer, this becomes too much for the boyfriend who then breaks up with her, leaving her all alone. She apparently had nobody in her life but the boyfriend.
