Stereotypes Of Women In The Media Essay

In today’s media, women are often portrayed as the most beautiful beings with perfect hair, face, body and lifestyle. As wonderful as all of that sounds, it tends to have a negative effect on “normal” women. It can also affect the women they are showing and providing information about. That does not mean that this portrayal cannot have a positive effect; however, more harm than good is possible. When the media talks about a woman, they usually talk about one of three types of women: a stereotypical celebrity that seems to have everything one could want in life, a kind, outspoken person that tries to make the world better, or a combination of both. The celebrity type is usually portrayed as someone that does not have a care in life, unless it has to do with material items or sometimes family. The “normal” women that view these women are able to see how much one person’s beliefs can make a change. By speaking out against those who want them to keep their opinions to themselves, they are able to help others and make a difference. The women in media are able to inspire those who do not feel confident in themselves. It causes the less influential women to become the influencer to those who need it in their community or socioeconomic class. They may also be inspired to live a healthier life by seeing how the “higher” women eat, exercise, or just the environment. Of course, it not possible for them to live exactly the same way, but it might be possible for them to attain some small changes. Those who are in the media are often put on a pedestal, so when they do something “wrong” people get upset. Because of their media attention, people are able to see that they are just as human as everyone
