Hardships for Women in the Entertainment Industry
Gender bias towards actresses in their workplace is a problem because of sexual harassment, lack of gender diversity, and facing harsh criticism. As time progresses, women have had more representation in entertainment, but there is still room for improvement. Each year in Hollywood, cases occur involving sexual harassment and criticism affecting hard-working ladies. Many of the lead actresses seen in larger roles today, including Emma Watson and Jennifer Lawrence, have joined the #MeToo movement, voicing their experiences with abuse and lack of voice in their workplace.
One reason gender bias is an issue in actressing is because of sexual harassment. Out of the actresses surveyed by experts, “Forty percent say they’ve experienced unwanted sexual attention or coercion at work.”(Covert 2 ) Men are not the only ones allowing the abuse to continue. Many male comedians are extremely famous for their witty jokes and attitudes, but women are constantly referred to as unoriginal. Comedians like Jeff Dunham, Kevin Hart, and Seth Rogen are extremely popular for their movies and personalities, but if one searched Amy Schumer’s or even Ellen Degeneres’s comedy online, they would find rows of negative comments simply stating “unfunny”. These harsh criticisms against women affect how other aspiring actresses view the workplace. Many more women would most likely be involved in comedy and films if they were not so afraid of potential backlash. Female producers/writers express their concerns of speaking during joke brainstorming when outnumbered, “you did feel that the quieter you were, the longer you were quiet, the more self-conscious you would be to say something, particularly if it wasn’t funny.
