Why are manufacturers targeting women to fill job positions? They are trying to fill the shortage caused by a growth spurt due to lowered energy costs. Companies are desperate to dispel the belief that factory jobs require heavy lifting. Now, they use high tech machines that take care of the heavy work. Women in the STEM fields—Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics are high in demand. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, women account for nearly half of the workforce. But, they hold less than a third of the nation’s manufacturing jobs.
Exactly, how are companies recruiting the female population? They do this through visiting job fairs and professional organizations. Some even brief at high schools.

What it doesn’t explain are some of the obstacles women may face in this industry. Sex discrimination and sexual harassment may be an issue in such a male dominated industry. Sexual harassment is bullying or coercion of a sexual nature, or the unwelcome or inappropriate promise of rewards in exchange for sexual favors. Fortunately, there are plenty of laws to protect workers against these obstacles. One such law is Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Title VII is a federal law that prohibits discrimination in employment on the basis of sex, race, color, national origin, and religion, and it applies to employers with 15 or more employees, including federal, state, and local governments.
