During the time before Title IX, it was rare for women to play sports and even be a part of the workforce. They struggled every day to get opportunities to play sports at every level, from grammar school to college. They were limited in the careers that they could choose. The way that education and athletic institutions were set up prior to 1972 made it extremely difficult for women to achieve anything on their chosen path, but Title IX made a huge change. This law’s purpose is to allow all students the ability to achieve their goals through education and athletics without the restrictions of discrimination based on gender. This by no means says that women should have better opportunities than men, but that they just have equal opportunities. As the years have passed since the passing of Title IX, women have been able to prove that they can compete just as competitively as men. They have taken the opportunities given to them by Title IX and developed their skills and athleticism to higher levels than ever before. The third instance of this is the number of women in STEM. Since just before Title IX in 1970, only eight percent of STEM workers were women, but by 2019 women made up twenty seven percent (Christinact and Martinez).
