Sterotypes: Bad Stereotypes In The Lion King

1.1 A negative stereotype in the movie “Lion King” is seen when looking at Ed, one of the hienas. Ed is part of a minority group that is not based on ethnicity. Mental ability is one of the 7 categories of otherness, mentally impaired is the subordinate group in this category. When I watched Ed, I immediately grouped him in with the mentally impaired group. When Ed displaid behavior like chewing on his own leg, he portrayed an exaggerated, generalization of what all mentally impaired people act like, silly, and out of it, almost dumb. 1.2 A negative stereotype that Scar portrays in the movie represents unreliable, exaggerated, generalizations about Black people. Simba is shown to be very naive and easily influenced by adult/authority figures. This stereotype is stating that all children are not smart, and easy to trick and take advantage of. When in fact most children are very sharp and its often difficult to pull the wool over their eyes. 1.4 A positive stereotype is seen when looking at baby Simba. Simba is the dominant group because he is at the top of the food chain and he has lighter fur than the evil lions. Simba represents Whites. In the beginning of the movie, all of the different animals bow down before the new king. This represents an unreliable, generalization of importance showing that all white people have power and are at the top of the food chain so to speak. Not all white people are the same, like stereotypes portray. 1.5 I didn't have any crazy feelings while looking for stereotypes. I knew I was going to find a whole bunch. I notice them in kids shows today, when watching with the kids I babysit. I felt sort of sad and enlightened at the same time. It clicked when analyzing the movie, thinking back, I noticed them as a kid. I didn't know what they meant, but I did noticed that Scar was a different color and I knew he was bad. It makes me kinda mad to think that this was sort of brainwashing me as a child in a totally entertaining
