Ever since the ideas of the enlightenment were created and introduced to mankind centuries ago, these ideas have been placed under heated scrutiny over the centuries. The center of this dispute has been largely focused, whether or not the ideas of the enlightenment is the most effective in producing a good society for humans. Steven Luke’s The Curious Enlightenment of Professor Caritat, continued this discussion. Towards the end of the novel, Lukes introduced a new collective set of characters to his audience. These new characters are the environmentalists, who are the symbolic embodiment of enlightenment. These characters provided a stark contrast between the enlightenment and the other philosophies discussed in the novel.
The environmentalists reflect the philosophy of the enlightenment. The environmentalists are a group of a young men and women. They decided to occupy the branches of the trees in a forest, which is located in outskirts of Libertaria.
