Stevie Wonder was a blind, African American singer (Lodder 7). He grew up with five other siblings and he was the third oldest child (Lodder 12). He created many recording albums and he had to constantly travel (Lodder 28). He performed in front of chaotic crowds (Lodder 8). Stevie is considered to be one of the most successful musical performers of the late 20th century (biography.com). He has recorded more than thirty of the U.S. top ten hits (newworldencyclopedia.org). Stevie Wonder overcame many obstacles as a blind singer.
Stevie Wonder was born two months premature (Lodder 12). He was born with the name, Stevland Hardaway Morris (biography.com). Stevie was born in Saginaw, Michigan on May 13th, 1950. He weighed less than four pounds. While he was still in the hospital, the doctors noticed Stevie wasn’t responding normally to light and movement. In 1973, he was awarded as the very first black person to ever win a Grammy. Ultimately, Stevie ended up winning twenty-four grammy awards (steviewonder.org.uk). Stevie went to Michigan School For The Blind and he graduated in 1969 (Lodder 54). Stevie’s life as a child was very difficult because he was blind. “May 13th, 1971 must have been a hugely significant, indelibly momentous day in the life of Stevie Wonder. It seems, looking back, as if a whole Rubik’s cube of circumstances was clicking into place when Stevie turned 21.” (Lodder 70). At the age of 21, everything in Stevie’s life was looking bright. Later after Stevie’s birthday he independently recorded two albums and he also signed a contract with Motown Records (newworldencyclopedia.org). Stevie Wonder was very selfless. He wrote many songs for other artists to sing (steviewonder.org.uk). In 1996, Stevie received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (cnn.com).
