Stoic Elements In The Aeneid

Aeneas is a without a doubt a warrior who will fight for his honor until his dying breath, and although that seems like a great characteristic, for a stoic it is not. The reason Aeneas cannot be counted as a good stoic based on this trait is because he is taking action based on his emotions. In Book Two Aeneas, sound asleep, is visited by a ghost named Hector who tells him to abandon Troy, “tear [himself] from the flames/ [For] Troy is toppling from her heights” (Virgil, The Aeneid, 2.364-5). He then awakens to his city in shambles, seeing his town and people getting cut down by the Greeks.
