In life, people find different ways to cope with their issues. This is the case in “Vaclav and Lena” by Hayley Tanner, where the main characters Vaclav and Lena face many obstacles, but use their imaginations to help them deal with the struggles they face in reality. This relates to the quote “Imagination is the one weapon in the in the war against reality” by Jules de Gautier, because Vaclav and Lena use their imaginations and dreams of better things to come, to ignore the problems they currently face. Vaclav and Lena use their imaginations and dreams of the future to forget about their issues momentarily, and to be able to postpone dealing with them.
As shock and devastation flooded over her and the rest who had heard the tragic news, the entire lot went completely silent, seconds seemed to drag on and on, minutes felt like hours as it all slowly sank in. For the stories that I’ve read this week was interesting. The first story was Jamaica Kincaid’s “Girl”. It was a very short story about a Mother teaching her daughter to behave like a woman. All the things that she said in the story was very strict and womanish.
In this story has complicated reaction of Louise Mallard upon learning of her husband’s death. First, Mrs. Mallard has a heart condition when news comes that her husband’s be killed in accident. Mallard’s sister Josephine sits down with her and dances around the truth until Mrs. Mallard finally understand what happened. When Mrs. Mallard finds out what happened she acts differently from most women in the same situation.
The story begins with Mrs. Mallard getting the news that her husband had died in a terrible train accident. At first Mrs. Mallard was racked with grief for the loss of her husband. As the story progresses, Mrs. Mallard says, “There was something coming to her and she was waiting for it, fearfully. What was it? She did not know.”
“I am a member of a team, and I rely on the team, I defer to it and sacrifice for it, because the team, not the individual, is the ultimate champion” is a quote by Mia Hamm. It means individuals are all belong to various communities so it is better to cooperate together rather than working alone. First role of the individual’s roles in society is to believe each other to cooperate together. Next role is to overcome various sufferings and adversity of nation together.
The two stories which impressed me most were Tell Tale Heart and A Curtain of Green. Although they seem very different from each other, I see them as different representations of two pretty similar stories. Both Tell Tale Heart and A Curtain of Green take us into memories of two protagonists who have some mental issues and who are presumably very lonely people. Both of the stories include highly dramatic climaxes; however, the ways we took while we join the characters in their journey are certainly different.
This shows how for as long as she can remember she has been withering her life away with a man that she had no intention of loving. Mrs. Mallard realized that this death had been the best thing that happened to her, she finally would be able to understand her true self and the goals she has. Mrs. Mallard demonstrates the social normative to staying with the man one marries. Although she shows how unhappy she once was, it was deemed as inappropriate to leave her husband. When Mr. Mallard dies, Mrs. Mallard opens up into who she really is and how she now knows what true happiness feels
Mrs. Mallard’s actions cause the readers to contemplate a hidden meaning woven into the story line. Mr. Mallard is assumed to die in a railroad accident, leaving Mrs. Mallard devastated. Instead of feeling sadness or grief, Mrs. Mallard actually feels free. "There would be no one to live for her during those coming years; she would live for herself. There would be no powerful will bending hers in that blind persistence with which men and women believe they have a right to impose a private will upon a fellow-creature" (Page 499).
That in Aleppo Once is a short story written by Russian novelist Vladimir Nabokov. Set in the 1940s, the story is written in the form of a single letter. The receiver of the letter, V., is the narrator’s friend who he used to write poems with, and is now living in the United States. The narrator proceeds to tell V. about his wife, and his suspicions that she doesn’t actually exist. He explains their journey to relocate to the United States, when in the middle of their voyage he becomes suspicious.
When Richard’s heard the news of her husband’s death, he assumed Mrs. Mallard would be devastated. While everyone knew Mrs. Mallard was “afflicted with heart trouble” (57), him and her sister, Josephine, wanted to give her the news with “great care” (57). The Short Story The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin explores the emotions of Louise Mallard a woman with a heart disease. In the hour that the story is told, it ranges from showing Mrs. Mallard different reactions to learning of her husbands death to him surprisingly showing up alive and eventually her untimely death from a heart disease. Although only a brief period of time is shown, many emotions are revealed through the third person omniscient point of view. This point of view shows more than just the protagonists thoughts and is not limited to one person. It allows the readers to know something about Mrs. Mallard that she does not as the story ends after Mrs. Mallard has already died.
Two short stories that are interesting are, "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant and "The Gift of the Magi" by Henry. Madame Loisel is a beautiful woman who does all she can to give back the necklace she borrowed from her friend. Della sacrifices her most valuable possession so she has the chance to give her beloved husband a nice gift for Christmas. While there are some obvious similarities, both authors approach these stories, specifically with the characters, tone and point of view, in many ways.
