All literature has some element of conflict, wether it is person verses nature or a inner conflict between one’s self, it will always allow the reader to have a different reaction according to the story. Depending on that reaction readers develop a liking to certain types of conflict, this can be due to the overall meaning of the story or to how relatable and common the said conflict is.
In “The Story of an Hour” the main character Mrs. Mallard is having an inner conflict with herself, due to the fact that she longs to grieve over her beloved husband who has supposedly died in a train accident, but also feels joy within her, for she will no longer be controlled by a man and can live her life as an independent woman. When first hearing of her husband’s death she did what any normal human would do, she shut herself in her room letting the pain and despair paralyze her, but when sitting there alone she realized the good things that had come from of her husbands death. After accepting the fact that she would live a better life without him how she saw the world changed. Her surroundings seemed more happy and comforting as she relaxed into her new state of mind. I also liked the way it was written, not reveling things until the right moment. It was so descriptive and I like how the entire mood changed in the middle of the story. I also favored the plot over the used written in “To Build a Fire”. The emotions that came with the theme were so powerful and fun to read about. My favorite part of the story was the irony that presented itself at the end of the story. It provided an element of humor which made the story very
