In most stories, you can read the beginning and have a pretty good idea of what is going to happen in it. This is not the case with Kate Chopin’s The Story of An Hour. The use of imagery was utilized at an alarmingly complex level, and its use would also be later seen through the eyes of foresight. Kate Chopin’s ability to paint a picture is what made this short story so interesting. The author contorted the story with a huge plot twist.
The main character in the story is a heart troubled soul by the name of Louise Mallard, a woman married to a man by the name of Brently Mallard. The author describes the tree tops as being “all aquiver with the new spring life” (Chopin 1). The author continues with more positive sounding descriptions like “delicious breath of rain” and “countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves” (Chopin 1). If this were a story of mourning, the main character’s surroundings would be described in a way that would seem to almost match the despair of said character. The whole appeal of this short story was its unexpected yet exciting turns. The interpretation of The Story of An Hour can be taken in many different directions, all uniquely accurate in their own ways, because it was never set in stone as to what exactly was meant by her feelings and dialogue. The author gives one a peak into the life of a woman inside a troubled marriage, who stumbles across a tragedy that rocks her world. With only thoughts as to what she went through, what her scars were, and what exactly the author was trying to say, the story in its entirety is completely relative to how the reader
