The symbols of “The Story of an Hour” K16a3031 Rina Kishioka The Story of an Hour tells us many symbols to the reader. Today I would like to talk about two symbols “patches of blue sky” and “creeping out of the sky”. Now, I am going to tell why I choose this two symbols. First of all, I think these two words describe important things in this story. “patches of blue sky” means there are many clouds and you can see blue sky from the clouds. I think this symbolize that Mrs. Mallard first thought she was so unhappy about her husband dead, we can read it from paragraph 3 at line 2 “She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister’s arms. When the storm of grief had spent itself she went away to her room alone. She would have no one follow her.” This sentence tells us that Mrs. Mallard was full of sadness, so full of cloud describe sadness and the blue sky describe the hope of her mind. I think she find the hope from the sadness. The blue sky that she find in the clouds is hope but also in the story it is about free. At paragraph 11 line 2 “ She said it over and over under her breath: “ free, free, free!” This sentence tells us that she was happy when she realized that she is free from everything. “ patches of blue sky” describe about Mrs. Mallard’s feeling. I think it looks similar to “patches of blue sky” “ patches of blue sky” was Mrs. Mallard found the free from the sadness, and now she tries to come out from the sadness by herself. These words continues to describe Mrs. Mallard feeling. Now, she wants to get out from the sadness and want to have free. From the story, Mrs. Mallard was very sad about husband dead, but she thinks that her feeling will change to freedom. The words “patches of blue sky” and “creeping out of the sky” symbolize her feeling in the words that is related to sky. The author uses these words to describe how is her feeling
