Industrial life increased employment for both the wealthy rich people and the poor people. Factory production played a major role in industrialization; the economy was rough during this period of time for working class people, life for the poor was harsh and incomes were low. Therefore, many people created their own clothing, furniture and tools. The factory production provided employment for many women and children as well. In the text it says, “…mill owners began referring to the workers as “poor children,” that description of people.”
However, in a way, she is telling the reader to think rationally and that there is no need for a case to be made - the factories are intrinsically evil. To support her article, Liebelson often cites statistics and uses numbers to aptly describe the nature of the situation. Most notably she cites the ages of the sumangali workers and statistics regarding money. She states that the girls can begin working as young as 13 and this number is repeated in different contexts multiple times to nail home the point of child labor. Making a child work all day long at such a young age, in an extremely dangerous environment to boot, paints a picture that Liebelson uses to her advantage.

Dagenhart 1918, the father of two sons one under fourteen years old and another one between fourteen and sixteen explains his concern about the exploitation of his children in a cotton mill. Overview Originally told in Rosalie Ham’s The Dressmaker, I decided to transform the event of Tilly Dunnage returning to Dungatar, where Ham conveyed Tilly’s struggle to care for her mother, Molly, who had been neglected and gone mad in her absence. Contrastingly, as Molly, I created an alarming letter addressed to Dungatar’s Sergeant Farrat expressing great fear of Tilly. Although my text referred to the same incident as presented by Ham, Molly’s perspective emphasised her extreme feelings of terror and anger towards the woman ‘invading her home’. This made Molly a vulnerable character, rather than positioning her in an ugly light as conveyed in Ham’s novel.
Conditions were hazardous and grueling. They worked long hours for little pay. Most of them could not read or write and they could not attend school because they needed to work. They suffered from malnutrition and exhaustion. They were innocent children that were locked up in factories, like they had committed a crime.
Child labor was a great problem in the Industrial Revolution. Factory owners usually hired women and children rather than men. They said that men expected higher wages, and they suspected that they were more likely to rebel against the company. Women and children were forced to work from six in the morning to seven at night, and this was when they were not so busy. They were forced to arrive on time and they couldn’t fall behind with their work because if they did they were whipped and punished.
