Straight Out Of Compton In 1986, five young men: Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E (Eric Wright), Dj Yella, and Mc Ren used savagely violent rhymes and hardcore beats to display their anger and frustrations about life and their struggle of living in Compton. They take us back to where it all began, straight out of Compton. This is a true story on how these cultural rebels who were armed with only their lyrics, swag, bravado and how their raw talent stood up to authorities. These five men formed their own revolutionary hiphop music group called N.W.A. Their journey turned them into the dark side of fame, sex, drugs, which triggered a lot of life-changing events. Jerry Heller, a music manager and business man, approached Erick Wright about his music. Heller became N.W.A’s manager. In 1989, Ice Cube leaves N.W.A due to a royalty dispute with Jerry Heller. These lesson taught us about complex and relevant issues that occur in the music industry: offering advice about contracts, musical rights, and even constitutional rights. Lessons that were shown in the movie about this type of business practice is to refuse to sign any kind of business agreement until your lawyer looks over it first, as Ice Cube did in the movie. Expensive clothes, Champagne, meals from your label might be costing you. For instance if you’re a musician who is signed to a record deal and is given expensive clothes, and luxurious meals from your label, the expenses involved might be deducted from you royalties, this is considered an advancement. An example from the movie is when Ice cube becomes suspicious after seeing Eazy-E and Heller eating lobster and drinking champagne. A number of royalty clauses for record deals tend to have catch-all-phrases that allow record labels to subtract just about anything the label spends on
