Some of the different strategies that Public Services use to prevent crime are Incapacitation, rehabilitation, deterrence, transcarceration and retribution.
Incapacitation is the response used when a person has committed a crime. By incapacitating the convict and putting them in prison, it prevents the individual from committing future crimes because they are removed from society and locked up or restrained. I think prisons are effective because it protects society from dangerous and violent criminals and also it isolates those who deserve such a punishment from their family and friends (retribution). For example, Neighbourhood watch is community based involving residents and tenants who are working together- Working in partnership with the police, local authorities and other agencies to reduce crime and disorder sharing information and advice with the police and other agencies concerning crime and other incidents. This helps Research at a higher level to find effective crime reduction methods to stop people becoming a victim of crime and reduce the numbers of victims in each area as communities work together and look out for each other more. Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships are also set up as a direct response to the Crime and Disorder Legislation Act 1998. Local authorities, police and other agencies work in partnership to develop and implement strategies to reduce crime and disorder. The partnerships carry out an audit of crime and disorder every three years and publish a strategy for dealing with the problems found. The idea was that these strategies must reflect local needs and priorities which means different partnerships around the country will be tackling different things and helping different victims of a variety of crimes.. Another way is PCSOs – Police community support officers. They are employed directly by the police and their primary purpose is to improve the community and offer greater public reassurance by helping victims of crimes and being present on the streets to talk to the local community about the crime issues currently in that
