Leadership and management are both skills that can be very useful in everyday situations as well as career areas; especially the health care field. Leadership can be seen as more of a natural characteristic where management can be used in a more professional manner such as a workplace. Some characteristics that a leader possesses are confidence, optimism, passion, courage, and integrity. Managers on the other hand, possess characteristics that are more authoritative, but it can be said that there are many qualities that intercept between both leadership and management. I believe that the first step in creating an improvement plan is figuring out the areas that can use improvement. The first step was completed in the section above which denoted areas that I can use improvement in to become both a stronger leader and manager. The second step to my improvement plan is to understand why I am struggling in certain areas and come up with a way to knock those barriers down. For instance, I can take self-confidence and I can learn to understand why this is one of my weak areas. Particularity, I know that I can be a shy and have a set back attitude in which I refrain from setting hard expectations right out. Thus, now that I know the reason as to why self-confidence is one of my weak areas, I can take that and look at how I can improve. Using the same example of self-confidence, I can look into ways such as various mental exercises that will allow me to expand my self-confidence to become a well-rounded leader and manager. The last step to my improvement plan is to actually incorporate what I have learned and built on into everyday practices in a leadership or management position. Healthcare is a complex industry and these skills are essential to a smoothly run system. For instance, leadership skills are considered very important because good leaders are able to be authoritative but also have an interpersonal relationship with the people they are mentoring or leading (Cushing, 2016). This creates a positive work environment and enhances quality of care given to patients. Furthermore, a well-rounded leader in the health care industry will create opportunities for their employees and introduce them to challenges while also supporting them though the situation (Cushing, 2016).
