Their effects can be evidenced by occasional habits that include depression, suicide, and domestic violence. They may also be susceptible to terminal illnesses such as cancer, heart attack and disability. A number of researchers have suggested that law enforcement is the most stressful profession in America. That is because they deal with the negative end of civilization. It is usually believed that the highest amounts of stress are reserved for those people who assume the top echelons of authority and command, in this particular case, the members of the disciplined forces. Many have been rendered jobless after being fired from the police force to stress related indulgences that could have been handled early enough. To manage these situations, there needs to be a resident counselor, who is preferably a member of the law enforcement officers to guide and counsel the affected officers from an experience point of view. Most police Stations have no religious inclinations or direction- which is good. But it is high time the system considered invoking higher powers for help in their work. Another painful reality is that stress chips away at our longevity. Some scientists suggest that human beings could live up to 120 years but the typical police officer doesn 't even come close.
