This essay will try to analyze the main causes of violent conflicts, making reference to the literature and taking into consideration the theories of greed and grievance. Furthermore, structural violence and its relation to violent conflicts will be discussed, to make an analysis on how well the literature explain the connection between the causes and the dynamics of the conflict. On the second half of the essay, the role of different actors in conflict resolution will be discussed, with particular attention on the different levels of mediation, the resolution between states and the UN and NGOs as fairly important mediators. Conflict resolution takes place "where the conflicting parties enter into an agreement that solves their central incompatibilities, accept each other's continued existence as parties and cease all violent action against each other" (Wallensteen, 2002, p.8). Before describing the different actors who could be involved in conflict resolution and their main roles, it is necessary to understand the different levels of leadership that the mediator can work with. The top-level leadership includes leaders who are usually known and high visible, they have the most power and influence and they are considered they highest representative of the two parties involved (Lederach, 2001). On the middle range level, mediators would collaborate with leaders who are certainly know by the lop-level leaders but they still have a more direct relation with the conflict context, thus connecting the highest and lowest levels. They are usually strictly related to religious groups, academic institutions or ethnic groups (Lederach, 2001). Finally, the grassroots level is composed by leaders who operate directly on the field, such as NGOs members or leaders of local communities (Lederach,
