In the documentary schooled: the price of college sports I learned that the NCAA does not treat student athletes like employees but these students are treated like slaves it all started in 1971 when the young Caucasian man by name of started playing college football for TSU, he was the running back for the team and when he caught the ball in running he was hit by two other players from the opposing team which caused him to be paralyzed for the rest of his life. Most of the players feel that they should be paid for playing college sports but the NCAA believes that a student who gets a full scholarship to play any sport at a university should not be paid because they are being paid with a free education, room, and board, and free meals, the NCAA

The average Division I football player dedicates over 43hours per week to his sport, meaning that he spends more than a typical American work-week training and playing football, in addition to his class work. Personally, I disagree with Harnett's viewpoint and I don't believe college athletes should be paid due to education, funding, and overall fairness. To summarize Harnett's article, he starts by talking about his opponents and their viewpoints on the situation, "They are already getting a scholarship, don't be greedy."
Think about it wouldn 't that be great in college while being able to graduate college debt-free? Well that is what college athletes get,so i don 't think is fair for them to get paid. College athletes should not be paid because they were the ones that signed up to be college athletes. College athletes have a responsibility to represent their college. Which is why college is a place to get degrees not money.
Financially this solution is feasible because the NCAA has more than enough money to give each of the athletes small shares to get what they need. Legally, the NCAA states

This has resulted in many believing these athletes deserve to be paid for their contribution to the schools athletic income. However athletes in college are given the opportunity to play the sport that they love as well as receive a top education. For some players a $20,000+ per year tuition is not enough, they want to be paid with more than just a scholarship.
Even though some may think if colleges and universities start paying their athletes that would mean that there would be fewer teams and would make it more competitive for high school athletes to make it to the next level. College athletes deserve to be paid because they are the only ones not being paid in the college sports industry. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) generates eleven billion dollars annually, some of which could, and should go to college athletes. “USA Today reported last year just how much money the top 10 coaches in college football made. Nick Saban from Alabama topped the list earning roughly $5.5 million in 2013 alone” (Seibold). The coaches are making millions of dollars and the players aren’t.
It is truly hard for these players to live up to the expectations by the NCAA. In the article “Why College Athletes Should be Paid” states that, “They need to be insured medically so their bodies cannot further develop lingering problems due to injury or stress on the tissues, muscles, and bones.” This quote means that colleges athletes are not medically insured and have to pay the total prices for medical treatment. This can be overwhelming especially with a shortage of money. This could lead that these athletes won’t be able to compete as well as other players.
Being able to play a sport in college is a gift that not many people receive, it takes hard work and dedication, a thing that has not changed since the first games were played. Over the years college athletics has grown, since the inception of the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) in 1906. The number of sports now allowed in the NCAA is twenty four and the number of schools who support each sport has grown by the thousands. College athletes compared today from fifty years ago have changed drastically because of how long they stay in college, wanting to be paid, and the different recruiting process. What is the difference between four years and a year the obvious answer is three years, but for a college athlete that could mean the make or break of your career.
College athletes already get their education free why should they get paid for playing a sport they love playing. What do you think, should college athletes get paid for playing the sport there in? Well I don’t think so and in this paper I will tell you and give you reasons why they shouldn’t be paid. College athletes are already getting a free education they shouldn’t be allowed to be paid.
