Over the course of history, studies have consistently demonstrated the detrimental effects that substance use and addiction can inflict on individuals, their families, and their support systems. When parents in a household have a drug addiction, they are at higher risk of subjecting their children to child abuse and neglect. For example, in many cases, due to their substance abuse issues, parents often leave their children without proper supervision-putting their safety at risk, they are more likely to forget to feed their children and neglect their basic needs, they are more likely to engage in acts of domestic violence and expose their children to such violence, they are also more likely to expose their children to their drug of choice. Growing up in such an environemnt makes children more susceptible to develop a drug problem themselves. Topic Description
Celebrating Families, an evidence-based 16 week program, strives to address the needs of families within the child welfare system by being inclusive of all family members in a household in order to help afflicted individuals break the cycle of addiction within themselves and their families. It is the only program of its kind that is inclusive of the individual with substance abuse issues along with all members of his/her family.
Project Statement
The purpose of this paper is to explore and analyze the impact of the Celebrating Families! on participants’ understanding of substance use and addiction and their roles within their family
