“When people kill themselves, they think they’re ending the pain, but all they’re doing is passing it on to those they leave behind.”The ”Suicide By Text” case has prompted many people to discuss social issues such as peer pressure and depression, which are really big issues that many overlook these days.
Michelle Carter, then 17, urged and convinced her then boyfriend Conrad Roy to commit suicide. Roy had informed her that he was eager to hurt himself, and although Carter knew this she did nothing to stop it. Roy committed suicide a few days later, Michelle Carter was only sentenced to two and a half years in prison and five years of probation. This case was not handled how I expect them to, especially since it was involuntary manslaughter. The fact that Carter knew what Roy had done makes it even worse because she did absolutely nothing about it to prevent him from killing himself. I noticed that Michelle Carter was given very little time in prison compared to what they asked to give her. Now, this might or might have anything to do with white privilege but it is possible. Michelle carter was supposed to be sentenced up to twelve years in prison, but she only received two and a half years. If, she happened to be a colored female she would’ve most likely got those twelve years if not more. “Earlier today, the prosecution asked Moniz to sentence Carter to seven to 12 years in prison.Meanwhile, earlier today the defense asked for five years of supervised probation with conditions including mental health treatment and no contact with the Roy family.
