Desiree’s Baby by Kate Chopin is a short story that goes through the mind of Desiree throughout her life. Desiree was found abandoned with unknown origins growing to marry Armand. Armand, a slave owner and a fascist, begins to neglect Desiree and the baby by assuming the of another race. Desiree endures the neglect, but eventually is led to suicide. The theme of the story can be to never jump to conclusions about other people. Leading to the points of her suicide many events can be used to foreshadow her death. In the early stages of the story its stated that Monsieur Valmonde is unsure about the marriage with Armand as her past is unknown. In the quote “ Monsieur Valmonde grew practical and wanted things well considered; that is, the girl’s origin.” hinting that something in the past can lead to something horrid happening in the future. Her unknown origin can unfold many possibilities to what the future can hold; Therefore , Catastrophic or great things can come from this. With the amount of possibilities made because of her past being unknown, assumptions are made of her past and leads to her misery and suicide. …show more content…

The short story includes “ Desiree’s eyes had been fixed absently and sadly upon the baby, while she was striving to penetrate the threatening mist that she felt closing about her.” revealing the wicked persona as she stares at the baby absently. It also indicates her growing depression represented by the mist closing about her. Throughout the growing depression we see that she is trying to recuperate by penetrating the mist, but is left unbroken. With the depression being unbroken it leads to her wicked persona being shown more throughout the story; finally taking her mind and leading to her
