All throughout history there have been many famously great leaders from all around the world. Included in this select group of commanders is Suleiman the Magnificent of the Ottoman Empire, Queen Elizabeth of England, and Nelson Mandela of South Africa. All of these rulers had three key characteristics of greatness in a leader: cultural appreciation, the respect of the public, and attention to education. There are many ways to be considered a great leader. Though a country can rise without literacy, the Mongols being an example of such, long term success in running a country does very much depend on the level of education of the people. Sometimes brawn isn’t as important as brains. This exact idea is shown in Suleiman who was known to be a great soldier. “Suleiman was not just a warrior. He was interested in learning, art, architecture, and the law.” Though Suleiman understood the importance of battle and fighting, he also recognized the good of education and information. The education he endorsed also led to the cultural appreciation he practiced in daily life as well. Never ceasing to amaze, Queen Elizabeth was just as well versed, herself. “She was a gifted scholar who was able to speak several languages including Latin, Greek, French, and Italian.” Queen Elizabeth not only supported the education of her people and increased literacy rates during her reign but she also was well educated herself. She constantly seeked out intellectuals to surround herself with to become even more educated than she clearly was.
