The term “fracture” is basically used in medical situations that deal with a break in a bone. This can range from severe full breaks to small cracks – anything that will affect the stability and integrity of the bone.
Broken bones can result from a number of different situations. Older people, women in particular, who may be suffering from Osteoporosis or other conditions, typically lose strength in their bones, making them more brittle and prone to breaks and cracks, even with only minimal impact. Young children are similarly susceptible, as bones have not fully developed, and children can often engage in physical play and activities that heighten the risk of injury.

Compression fractures can be so small that they sometimes go unnoticed, being attributed to back pain or other common complaints. Sometimes compression fractures are considered to be pathologic, in that they are typically attributed to another underlying illness that is causing fractures to occur. In the case of compression fractures, Osteoporosis is often an underlying factor that needs to be treated in addition to physical issues.
Compound fractures are typically the most severe of bone breaks, as this is when a bone will actually break the skin due to the severity of the injury. In the case of compound fractures, there are typically additional pressing needs such as closing and treating open wounds that must be immediately addressed.
Simple fractures are the quickest and easiest to treat, as they do not entail broken skin or damage to any nearby areas. However, without immediate care, simple fractures can heal incorrectly and/or cause a number of other complications.
