Facing Hatred
The novel Survivors shows how the culture of the Jews develops rapidly over time. It includes nine stories of nine different survivors from the Holocaust and how they persevered to get out of their situation. The cultural development of this novel is present in aspects of their actions, character archetype, character development, and plot. The holocaust, the systematic mass slaughter of European Jews in nazi concentration camps during World War II, was one of the most tragic times in history which nearly lasted 12 years.

“It was Camp Vught that the Levys first witnessed the shocking brutality of Nazi guards, especially officer Etlinger.” (Zullo & Bovsun page 79) This is describing an action that took place in a concentration camp. This would’ve been different if it was a different culture because most of the time countries are enemies, not people being in the same country against one another. “Adding to Walters uneasiness were the times that he and his Jewish friends had been pelted with stones by fellow students who called them “stinking Jews”.” (Zullo & Bovsun page 101) If this had been in a different country it probably wouldn’t have been as brutal because most of the time it’s just kinda playing around but in Walters case, the Nazis don’t care at all about Jews or what happens to them. “Despite a Nazi-enforced curfew on everyone in the area, Stainslow Nazi-enforced curfew on everyone in the area, Stainslow came most nights to the haystacks, supplying the families with information and a little food.” (Zullo & Bovsun page 136) This would be different if it occurred somewhere else because Germany is the only place that has overtaken their own society and has tried to enslave them. “All Jewish families have been ordered to turn over their valuables to the Nazis. They say it’s contribution.” (Zullo & Bovsun page ) This can show how the Nazis are trying to overrule the Jews and the Jews are quite unaware of the situation. “ (Zullo & Bovsun page ) Were you injured during the battle?” This can prove that the Nazis were careless of their actions towards the Jews and would do anything to get rid of all of them. “Lunica was too young to understand that the chaos outside on this frightening summer night in 1941 had been triggered by Germany’s invasion and occupation of the polish city of Lvov.” (Zullo & Bovsun page 5) This can show that the Jews are an iniate archetype because they have no clue what’s going on or why it’s exactly
