The scene I chose to close read is from Hope Leslie, which was written by Catherine Sedgwick and published in 1827. During this scene, Magawisca was retelling the story of the Pequod War from her perspective as a Native American to Everell, who was white. She described how the Europeans attacked the Pequods and how they killed several Natives. After Magawisca tells her version of the story, Sedgwick discussed how this affected Everell and his opinion about Native Americans. In this scene, Magawisca’s recollection of the Pequod War positively changed Everell’s perspective about Native Americans, established a deeper bond between Everell and Magawisca, and showed Sedgwick’s feelings of sympathy and admiration for the Natives.
Journal #1 While reading “The Joy of Nelly Deane” by Willa Cather. Nelly is describe as the prettiest girl in town of Riverbend and she was the happiest. Nelly seems to be free spirited and three of the women in this story was hoping she would go to their church and not the Methodist church. Everyone seem to like Nelly. Nelly and her friends are in a play called “Queen Ester” they have long practices took them three months to make it right.
Passing by Nella Larson is a very ambiguous story. This book took place in the 1920s during the Harlem Renaissance. For quite some time American history racism has been an issue. Nella Larsen herself had been one of the women who wrote during this period of time. The story itself is about two women who are passing to be white, Clare Kendry and Irene Redfield.
Chris Shea Professor Christine Doyle ENG 348 02/02/16 Analytical Response Paper for Hope Leslie: Volume 1 In Volume 1 her of 2-Volume novel Hope Leslie, Catherine Maria Sedgwick demonstrates that in order for a character to be deep and complex, he (or she) does not have to be a white colonist from England. In this case we have Magawisca, who is, according to the introduction to the novel, the first complex Native American character in American literature. This means Sedgwick’s novel is a real testament to not only its feminist roots, but also to its race theory roots.
Life can be better if you have hope, and it will give you a chance to accomplish your goals. In the novel, Fever 1793, by Laurie Halse Anderson, did u notice that Mattie had hope for her grandpa? In the book Mattie has hope for a lot of people like her mother. Throughout the novel Mattie starts to have more hope. I know that she has hope throughout the novel because she wouldn't of ben able to raise Neil.there are many things people will say about hope, but if Mattie didn't have hope she wouldn't of been able to live through the fever If you have hope then you will try more things, and it will spread to people around you.
1. The process I went through as I created my ABC book was I thought a lot about things I liked that started with each letter in the alphabet. I wrote the letters A to Z on a piece of paper and then thought about something that started with each letter that had something to do with my life and who I am. I also made sure that it was all something appropriate for a young child to read so that I can share it with them to help them get to know me better. I illustrated my book by taking pictures of the things I talked about for each letter in my ABC book.
Housewife In her article "Motherhood/Paradise Lost (Domestic Division)", Terry Martin Hekker, a housewife who had been married to John Hekker, her husband, discusses the drawbacks of housewife as an occupation for women by sharing with the public her experience as a housewife in two different situations and centuries. The article aims to inform other women that depending on housewife as an occupation is really bad for their future. Hekker’s article is a good advice for today’s mothers as it is based on real experience. Hekker explains in her article that housewife is a good occupation, but there must be alternative jobs as it is not a permanent occupation.
King Philip’s war of 1675 -1676 is sometimes referred to as the First Indian War. A war that was between New England colonists, the Plymouth settlers, and the Wampanoag with their leader Metacom. King Phillip, of the Wampanoag, was known to his tribe as Metacom but to the New England colonists as Phillip. The war between Metacom and the colonists would change the relationship between Indians and the English settlers for decades.
In the feature article “All Guts, No Glory”, I agree with the author Molly M. Ginty, that women participating in combat. If I was in the military some of the things that might affect me would be probably because of my gender. First, women would not be put into battle because people think women cannot handle the work or bloodshed. They think women are better off bring a nurse for helping men in battle if they get injured. Second, they think women in combat would be a distraction.
Ervin Beisch Cheryl C. Smith’s, “Out of Her Place: Anne Hutchinson and the Dislocation of Power in New World Politics,” is an attempt to explain the plight of women and their suffrage during colonial times and especially during the puritan era. This article goes on to explain and describe the trials and tribulations of Anne Hutchinson for speaking out against the ministers in the Massachusetts Bay Colony from 1636 to 1638 (Smith). The author wrote about how the male dominated society of the Massachusetts Bay Colony viewed the place of women in their Society. The author describes how Anne Hutchinson brought fear to the men and leadership the colony when she started teaching and voicing her opinion about the local ministers preaching about saving grace from good works instead of saving and redeeming grace from the holy spirit (Smith).
In this article, Fay Yarbrough discusses the legislation passed by the Cherokee in order to control the marital options and choices of their women. Yarbrough begins by explaining the role of Cherokee women with regards to marriage, especially to non-Cherokee men, and the Cherokee laws policing sex and marriage. She then discusses the racial implications of those laws, specifically the laws regulating marriage with people of African descent. Yarbrough concludes by addressing Cherokee legislative provisions that include whites as viable marriage partners. She argues that through these marriage laws, Cherokee officials attempted to racially redefine the Cherokee people, aligning themselves closer to the white race and distancing themselves from those of African descent.
Grace Abbott is known for her actions against children working under the age of ten. She was involved with the “Children's Bureau” from 1921 to 1934. She was born in Nebraska in 1878. Grace started life as a high school teacher, then finished as a well-known leader in the Children’s Bureau. She created the “Immigrants Protective League” in 1909 and became the head of the Children Bureau in 1921.

Annette Kolodny in her essay, “Unearthing Herstory”, explains the concept of engendering landscape and its effects on American society. Kolodny believes the “vocabulary for the experience of the land-as-woman” (611) was a result of the settlers’ fantasies of America nature. She argues that because of the beauty and fertileness of the land led to “an abstraction of the essential femininity of the terrain” (607). Moreover, the inaccuracy of explorers also contributed to this fantasies, for their documents painted a picture of America as a paradise, thus presenting them the false picture (607-608). Therefore, the settlers labeled the New World as a Mother, who brings life source and happiness, or a woman.
