An American is someone who is curious about how things work or how they are created, and want to use that knowledge to make a better life for themselves, or to understand the world around them. In the Origin myths the Indians try to explain where either the Earth, or humans came from, to help them understand the world around them, and their connection to it. During Of Plymouth Plantation the Pilgrims come to the New World to escape religious persecution, but would not have survived had it not been for the Indians. During An Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, he teaches himself to read and write in hopes that it will help him to one day buy his freedom. The story explains that the Chief of the Sky Spirits created life by sticking his finger into the ground to create trees. And that he broke pieces off of his walking stick to make all the Animals on Earth, the biggest of which was the grizzly bear. The story also explains how people came to walk the Earth. Explaining that the first Indians were the grandchildren of the Sky Chief 's daughter and a grizzly bear. And that when the Sky chief discovered this he cursed the grizzlies telling them “get down on your hands and knees. You have wronged me, and from this moment all of you will walk on four feet and never talk again” (When Grizzlies Walked Upright, 26) explaining why even though the Indians and the grizzlies were related they could not understand each other. And why the Indians that lived near Mount Shasta never killed a grizzly bear even in self defence. In both these stories the Indian tribes telling them are trying to make sense of the world around them. Satisfying their curiosity to how Earth and the life that lived on it were
