Flannery O’Connor uses foreshadowing throughout her story “A Good Man Is Hard to Find.” If the reader picks up on the foreshadowing in the beginning of the story, he or she can tell that the ending is not going to bode well for Bailey and his family. Discussions of The Misfit, descriptions of the family, and other parts of the story provide evidence of foreshadowing where the reader will be able to make an assumption of the fate for Bailey’s family. Flannery O’Connor uses too much foreshadowing in this story; if the reader is really paying attention to the foreshadowing in this story then he or she can figure out how the story will end. O’Connor does not waste anytime throwing foreshadowing topics into this story. In the first paragraph, Grandma introduces The Misfit. Grandma is a big opponent to the idea of Bailey taking the family to Florida since she wants to go to Tennessee. O’Connor puts the news headlines in the first paragraph to make the reader wonder if the family will run into The Misfit on their way to Florida. Grandma even makes a comment about how she would not risk her children’s lives by going in the same direction as a criminal who just escaped from federal prison (para 1). O’Connor makes sure that the reader knows the cat is hidden from Bailey since he does not like to arrive with animals at a motel (para 10). Anyone that picks up on this foreshadowing can tell that the cat will cause a problem later on in the story. O’Connor also mentions what Grandma was wearing. Grandma’s thought process in her attire was that if they had an accident she wanted everyone to know that she was a lady (para 12).
