(1)Settlement is a small community of people living in a new place and the settlement movement is “an attempt by some Progressive intellectuals to bridge what they saw as an ever*widening cultural gap between the rich and poor” (Roberts 1). So the main purpose of the settlement movement is establishing of "settlement houses" in underprivileged areas, so middle class student sociologist can live there to have better understanding the life of the poor people. Then, they can share their knowledge to better understand and help the society. This reminded me a book I read when I was taking another sociology class. Book is called “Gang Leader for a Day: A Rogue Sociologist Takes to the Streets”. The writer spend most of his times among the gangs to better understand how it is to be a gang member. His research takes many years to complete similar to Hull House projects. I found the Hull house project and this book very similar because they both believe that to better understand the society and situations they are in, you have to live it yourself. And I believe that is true but at a certain extent. One cannot tell how it feels like to be poor if s/he has never been poor or have never been in a place where poor people lives. My kids are a great example to that. Thankfully we have everything and we share what we have with our kids all the time but sometimes we want to limit things then my kids would say no then we show the picture of kids who are poor and homeless and try to teach them to be thankful instead of asking more but they do not understand the whole concept because they have never been poor, they are given everything they wanted, they have never been in a place where underprivileged people …show more content…

And different societies have different ethics. Something can be totally ethical in a particular society but it might be unethical in another society. “Adam argued that recent social changes had led to profound changes in the nature of our relation sites. The most influential factors in her mind were 1) the shift from an agricultural to an industrial economy 2) urbanization. And 3) immigration” (Roberts 3) It really makes sense that these situations can cause conflict of ethics because each of them cause a change in a society. For example, immigration is perfect example to that because when people move from one culture to a totally different culture and continue to behave the way they used to then there will be a big clash. The new immigrants needs time to adjust and sociologist job to help those immigrant to adjust. How can sociologist help immigrant to adjust? According to Adams to be able to help the first, sociologist need to be able to understand them. “The time calls for a new and social ethics, understood as a systematic expansion of the democratic principle; and that this ethical transformation requires a broader understanding of the lives and perspective of the society’s various groups” (L&N 94).
