The book Refugee by Alan Gratz explores risk-takers' lives and why they take risks. Risk-taking can be exciting for those who enjoy exploration and discovery, but in this case, they are doing it for several reasons. Overcoming dangerous situations, Josef and Isabel both teach that risk-takers must make sacrifices to find a safer and better life for themselves and their families. After living in Germany for an extended period, Josef and his family were forced to relocate to their new home in Pecas due to the outbreak of World War II. Same as Josef. Isabel had to find a new place to live and she almost died but she stayed with her family and friends. Isabel and her family took a risk but knew she would make it and she believed her family and her father were run from the government. The risk was a good risk for Isabel. Isabel is a brave girl for going against the impossible; “Fight against the impossible and win, Isabel told herself” (Gratz 187). Isabel knew that the boat/raft was safe to be on, but she still goes on the raft to take a risk that might be good or bad for her. Isabel is bold for “Isabel took in as much air as she could and dove down beneath an oncoming wave: She found Senor Castillo's body in the dark, wrapped her arms around him, and kicked as hard as she could for the surface” (Gratz 137). The family must stay together to overcome hardship. Isabel's risk was to save her family and friends. Isabel was successful because her family and friends made it to America.
