Under Mayhew’s criterion for a successful political career, it is easy to argue that Representative Long has fulfilled the criterion and has led a successful career. Constituents directly influence many of the political actions members of Congress make because they are the ones who possess the power of the vote, not the representative himself. As observed his television advertisement was a tool utilized by Long to reach a larger audience and for voters to be able to associate a face with the name, “Billy Long.” By enacting and sponsoring certain pieces of legislation, Representative Long was successful in claiming credit and taking a strong position to rally support around his campaign and platform. All of these moves attributed to the multiple reelections of Representative Long.
In chapters 16-20 of the novel, “Cue for Treason” by Geoffrey Trease, Kit and Peter went to the Peel tower to look for Tom Boyd, as he did not come back from the tower the night before. Peter went in and Kit stood watch for anyone coming. Peter discovered the plot of the situation because he overheard two men talking. The plan was to murder the Queen. The murder would happen in the middle of the play, King Henry the Fifth.
The tradition begun by the journalists in Jensen’s book still continues today. Greg Palast is one such journalist who is following in the footsteps of the muckrakers. He has been called the “most important investigative reporter of our time” by The Guardian and has been responsible for writing front page stories for influential news outlets such as “BBC Television Newsnight, The Guardian, Nation Magazine, Rolling Stone and Harper's Magazine”. His area of expertise is corporate fraud and he has gone undercover to conduct his investigations on five continents. He is responsible for writing influential stories such as “BP's Deepwater Horizon blow-out”, the U.S. role in the coup against Hugo Chavez, Enron’s attempt to buy favors from the British government, and the U.S. Presidential election theft in 2000 in
In Barbara Ehrenreich’s article, “Your Local News”, her ideas about outsourcing help the reader understand Fareed Zakaria’s thesis that we are living through a power shift called “The Rise of The Rest” by explaining that America is not declining but is helping everyone else rise above. These authors come together to further understanding of the shift of power that has occurred due to outsourcing, putting America in the backseat of progression, but not out of the race. Ehrenreich introduces his ideas by explaining that “in the eighties, US companies began outsourcing the manufacturing of everything from garments to steel…”, but by the nineties, “back office and call center jobs migrated to India” (609). This helps the readers understand Zakaria when he he tells his readers that “for the first time ever, we are witnessing genuinely global growth.”
1The McCarthy Era was a period of the Cold War when fear of communism in America was at an all-time high. These tensions were exacerbated by the man this era is named for, Senator Joseph McCarthy. Senator McCarthy was known for throwing around unsubstantiated claims related to communists in the government and this only intensified the fear of communism for ordinary Americans. This panic led to Americans looking for someone to blame. One group that came under heavy fire were women, more specifically mothers.
In order to craft their argument, the two authors use ethos, pathos, and logos throughout their piece to make it effective. Collinson and Reston establish credibility throughout the article by using quotes from Republicans and their varied opinions. Throughout the article, Collinson and Reston present opinions from Republicans praising Boehner’s decision to Republicans stressing extreme concern for the future. Senator Ted Cruz was one of many who expressed joy after learning about Boehner’s departure,
The storyteller focuses on libel in the election by word of mouth and in the newspaper. The video somewhat reminds me of the most recent election in which there was a lot of libel and slander on social media sites such as YouTube, Twitter, Facebook
He says, “The major issue in our current dysfunction is the struggle within a Republican Party that is not the traditional battle between moderates and conservatives — there are no moderates any more to speak of.” The Tea Party stood up against Obama and that appealed to part of the American electorate. Certain Republicans who received Tea Party support and funding now have a seat because of the extremely conservative group and are left to do their bidding when the time comes to vote. Ted Kaufman, Chairman of the Congressional Oversight Committee, wrote the article: The Downward Spiral of Dysfunction in Congress. In it he mentions a Fox News story which says, “Unprecedented in the history of the House of Representatives, a Republican lawmaker filed a motion…to remove House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, from his post, in another sign of
The Conservative Mind by Russell Kirk is a book about the criticism and opinion of the conservative thought. Although in the passage he mentions several men like Tocqueville, Hooker, Hegel, and Burke he furthermore appears to leave out countless of other men. Kirk believes that Edmund Burke is the greatest of modern conservative thinkers, he was not afraid to acknowledge what he thought was right, and to go to a further extent he thinks Burke is the founder of our conservatism. Tocqueville is one of the few men who was actually given satisfying props and recognition. The main reason for this was due to the fact that his lasting impact towards the Englishmen and Americans.
Meaning they will do anything as long as it doesn 't threaten their principal goal which is reelection.” (Arnold, 5). Reelection is the main goal but members of Congress will do other things that are beneficial to their constituency unlike the theory that Mayhew brings up. Although, congressmen have to watch out for what they say and how they act since there will always be an opponent who will attempt to bring all those things to light to use them as an advantage and most of the time is decisions and conditions that the public hasn 't even noticed and wouldn 't at all if it wasn 't for the robo-challenger. In addition to that reasoning congressmen are extremely unpopular with the public because they have to take into consideration the input of experts, generalist and ordinary people.
Many allegations speaking of the misconduct within politics were getting made by muckrakers as time progressed, along with an increase in conversation about politics. A fluctuation of articles began to get written speaking of the much needed regulations to create a sufficient government. David Phillips wrote the Treason of the Senate, a series of articles published in Cosmopolitan magazine. It spoke of the corruption within America’s politics through David Phillip’s depiction of current events. He spoke of the ways large companies would get their concerns brought up to the senate prior to average citizens of America, through corruption and payouts.
The presidential election in 2016 has definitely been one to remember. A woman won a nomination and Donald Trump became the presidential nominee for the United States of America. Chris Matthews, who is a political commentator, wrote a book titled Hardball: How Politics is Played Told by One Who Knows the Game. This book lists several maxims, or rule of conduct, that he believes politicians use the most. A few of them seem obvious, like positioning or keeping your enemies in front of you.
No woman is allowed to be angry. This is the message that is subliminally delivered by those who tend to accuse the anger of a woman as a played-out weapon. For far too long has the uproar of unjust accusations made by women been disregarded as an emotionally biased issue. This has caused a great many of women to restrain their tongues before speaking their true and pure opinion. They fear persecution and that their whole argument will not be taken heavily if the delivery is not well thought out and calmly delivered.
He begins this article by illustrating the ethos of Trump, and how he has addressed the issue of illegal immigration, and has shown the picture that he is a hardline conservative where he wants to stop the impacts of illegal immigration all together in the United States. For example, Finnegan states, “Under President Trump, the crackdown has come in many form, beginning with the slapdash ban on travel from several Muslim-majority countries. Trump has voted to triple the number of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers; expand the Border Patrol…” (Finnegan, 2017). In addition to this, Finnegan addresses the point made by Spakovsky and Attorney General, Jeff Sessions who state that the program is unconstitutional as just utter lies, a direct counterargument.
The Republican Party of 2015 is the antithesis of the principled and conservative party of 1980. Led by a Speaker of the House who is as likely to cry as he is to make back-room deals with liberal socialists, the GOP is on a steady, downward spiral of cowardice and corruption. The campaign promises that swept Republicans into power in the House and Senate has fallen to the wayside like a mask withdrawn to reveal the ugly, twisted features beneath. The intense and explosive frustration of conservative voters stems from the helpless witnessing of a once conservative party gone mad with a lust for power, money and more big government. This vicious cycle of lies, evasions and calumniations to gain majority seats only to spit in the faces of those
