The article, “Apocalypse Now” by Harvard biologist, Edward O. Wilson, was published to The New Republic in 2006. This piece of writing is structured as a letter to an imaginary Southern Baptist pastor, and the larger evangelical community as a whole. As the article begins, Wilson communicates to the pastor that, as a young boy, he was baptized into the church, and although he no longer practices this faith, he is sure that if he and the Pastor met, they would share many commonalities. Yet after seeking his counsel and help, through those assured shared common attributes, Wilson cannot ignore the many fundamental differences between the way the two think. He proceeds to name off several differences between the two until realizing that, despite their differences, they share a common goal – the preservation of Creation. …show more content…

Upon stating this, Wilson proceeds to ask why, we as humans, should care about the present conditions of our Earth. He expresses that humans, similar to other species, reside in the biosphere, and as the biosphere gradually degrades, so will humans; we are in danger. However, in contrast to other species, humans are at most fault for this environmental damage, instilling change that simply alters natural surroundings, and in destroying the biosphere, humans are also destroying many sources of scientific information from undiscovered medicines, crops and timber, to soil restoring vegetation and petroleum
