In the short story Tending Roses, crafted by Lisa Wingate, the short story is of a woman, Katie, who is visiting her Grandma’s farm with her husband and son. She sits in the night, opening up a book about fireflies and wildflowers. She finds herself feeling sentimental about all of this, remembering how she was with her children and what lightning bugs reminded her of. Reading the journal leads Katie to remind herself to look for fireflies because they remind her of her Grandma when she was around and to put time aside to enjoy the smaller things in life.

Rose was told by her mother she was “without wood”, and bends too easily to what others say. Essentially, she explains that Rose is too agreeable and does not assert herself. This dynamic is seen in her relationship with her husband, Ted. She would turn to him to ask what to do rather than inject her own opinion. After Ted loses a malpractice case, he starts to doubt himself and forces Rose to make more decisions.

Kindness is one trait every individual desires to be treated with by others. It is , after all, the state of warm welcoming that helps us assimilate in a society. Besides, no one likes the feeling of getting rejected by a particular group based on their different backgrounds, culture, physique and/or experiences. The only way that perhaps heels this rejection ,due to the difference's in an individual, are the acts of when an another individual presents and treats others with their acts of benevolence. This act then also sheds a new light on an other individual's perspective, and gives them the knowledge to assert what they think is right for them to obtain their objectives.
The realistic fiction story, “Ashes”, by Susan Beth Pfeffer is about a young girl who has two very polar opposite parents. A fun, but irresponsible father, and a practical, proactive mother. Ashes faces a major dilemma when her financially troubled father asks Ashes to steal from her mother’s emergency fund for his own personal needs. Sometimes, the people you love most can be selfish and deceive you. This relates to my story because Ashes’ dad is manipulative, deceptive, and selfish.
So, she goes against him and finally stands up to him using her inner power: “and the answer, the one that was important above everything else, ran through my body and fell from my lips: ‘you can’t just pull me out of your life and throw me away’” (Tan 196). Rose uses “ran” and “fell” to describe the sudden rush of power that went through her. Suddenly finding her underlying authority, she finally tells Ted her feelings. She had never spoken up for herself, and for most of her marriage, she has been a “ghost.
