Do you think your activities online are being monitored. Well some schools are starting to monitor all of their student’s online activities, even the things they do away from school. In “At Some Schools, ‘Big Brother’ is Watching”, by Kelly Wallace, it talks about some schools monitoring systems for their all of their students online activities and posts. Kelly Wallace thinks that students have a right to privacy, but when their life is in danger, the school has a right to step in. I agree with Kelly, in that if someone sees that a student is talking about suicide, they can tell somebody, and the school should be able to investigate. Otherwise, the school should stay out of their students personal lives. In florida, a girl by the name of Rebecca Sedwick committed suicide. The school knew of kids bullying her while they were at school, and did something about it to make sure it didn't happen anymore. “... but it was not aware of the off campus bullying -online- that was taking place,” (Wallace). “... if you are talking about saving a student’s life, then you’d rather be safe than sorry,” (Quoted in Wallace). If the student is having issues in school, and the school knows it, then they should look into the student's personal life, to see if they are having the same issues outside school. Then with the new info, they can make a decision on what to do, whether that be confront the student in school, or talk to the police or parents about the student. In the case of life or death, I would rather have the school step in if they have reasonable suspicion of off campus bullying. Otherwise they should not be looking into things.
