When life gives you lemons what do you make? Lemonade. The sweet, tasty, refreshing liquid running through your body. The feeling of success. In the story, Make Lemonade, written by Virginia Euwer Wolff, Jolly, a 17 year old girl, goes through life while raising two kids.
When registering for this class, a wave of worry ran through me, because I had minimal skill when it came to writing, particularly in the field of formal writing. The high school I attended was academically poor, we never wrote formal papers, just informal book and movie responses. Therefore I was apprehensive about this class. This course was quite intricate, but I attend skills that will aid me for the rest of my academic career. Rhetorical knowledge, critical inquiry, process, and conventions are all concepts I have acquired.
250200 - Course Journal Evaluation Unit 1: Introduction to Composition, Entries 1-6 June 30, 2017, ENTRY 1: Me, a Writer, Attitude: My position about writing is that I dislike the exercise, I know this course will help me appreciate the writing. The main problem I have is putting my ideas in writing. I am sure this course will help me to be able to state my ideas, then improving my writing skills, it is important to me to write my ideas clearly. The support of my family encourages me to continue to practice writing.
The article by Donald Murray entitled, “The Maker’s Eye: Revising Your Own Manuscripts” provides readers a better understanding of the writing process and argues that writers learn to write, by writing and rewriting. Murray also contends that writers must learn to be their own best enemy. Well, I believe I have this trait covered! I will confess, that I purposely saved this course for last, due to the number of years between my last structured learning experience and returning to school to complete a BSN degree.
Coming into RCC 200 in August, I felt confident as a writer in my ability to articulate my thoughts into a well-developed essay. However as with any student, I knew that I had plenty of room to improve, most notably in regards to formulating a strong thesis, descriptive body, and well-summarized conclusion, and was fortunate to have countless sources to guide me throughout the semester. At the conclusion of two months of practice, I have learned several new techniques of how to properly convey my writing across various forms of papers, which is best exemplified when comparing my annotated bibliography to my i-search paper. What was most challenging about my annotated bibliography was my lack of ability to apply college level strategies across several aspects of my paper. In hindsight, it is understandable as to how I was unable to express myself in a more coherent manor as I was not yet introduced to tools such as our class book They Say I Say, assistance from tutors at the writing center, or valuable expertise from college professors.
Beyonce’s 2016 visual album, Lemonade, carries her audience through different emotional chapters of her life, presumably following the infidelity of her husband, Jay Z. Although Lemonade touches upon sensitive racial issues and the oppression of African-Americans, I decided to focus more on the sentimental aspect of the film. It is a consensus that women of all kinds are stereotyped as ‘frail’ or ‘hysterical,’ especially when their emotions are transparent, but why is it that the black woman is perceived as ‘angry’ when she does so? Beyonce’s third track on Lemonade, “Don’t Hurt Yourself,” features an excerpt of a speech given by Malcolm X that reads: “The most disrespected person in America is the black woman. The most unprotected person in America is the black woman.” To dismiss and undermine the emotional traumas Beyonce discloses in Lemonade confirms the veracity of Malcolm X’s statement.
For my critical report i decided to watch Beyoncé’s Documentary Life Is But a Dream. Beyonce is a superlatively capable, lovely, modest, elegant, dedicated, and fulfilled performer. Scenes of Beyoncé executing her specialty, whether it's recording in the studio, practicing moving moves, or singing from the back of a car, are shocking. Life Is But a Dream strings together footage shot among the months encompassing the arrival of 2011's 4, punctuated by live exhibitions and sections amid which she answers questions about her life and her work from a prop questioner while roosted on a lounge chair at home.
In my argument essay, I tried to voice a strong opinion, but fell short. Although our process analysis essays and cover letters haven’t been graded yet, I believe that I portrayed a more confident tone and style in those than I did in my argument essay. While writing those particular essays, I focused more on meeting the requirements sufficiently and voicing my opinion effectively. I believe that gaining this kind of insight on essay-writing is a reflection of improvement in my writing skills and overall
Wendell Berry begins the text by presenting the readers a clear title which principally sets the setting and over all gives the readers a thought of what the content will be about. In the first paragraph, Berry presents his argument by reviewing the topic 's two contradicting groups : the individuals who coexist with nature and other people who don 't. Berry decides to concentrate on the significance of the two groups and their differences and avoids voicing his own opinion. Then again, his comment on the perils of the contradicting groups clarifies the significance of the topic at hand and is fundamentally a persuasive element which induces the reader’s interest and persuades them to continue reading the text. The text is written with diction that a great majority of readers will have the ability to comprehend.
Throughout my education, writing strategies persisted to be a challenge for me. I dreaded writing because I could never find ways to transition my thoughts from my mind to the paper. Ironically, a class that petrified me due to the amount of required writing ended up helping me in numerous ways. English 1301 and my professor prepared me for college and real life by giving me a foundation of effective learning strategies.
Every great mythical tale consists of a Hero’s Journey as the backbone of the story. Yet the hero of Ella Enchanted strays far from the norm of most heros. An archetypal protagonist faces an ultimate antagonist or villain, yet Ella from Ella Enchanted battles a conflict within herself. Ella Afrell, born in the quiet town of Frell, qualifies as a normal baby until a fairy godmother comes along. Lucinda the fairy blesses the new born with a curse, despite her naming it a gift.
As I was reading Melissa Duffy’s “Inspiration, and Craig Vetter’s “Bonehead Writing,” I found myself connecting with Vetter’s paper more than Duffy’s. I found that the presentation in “Bonehead Writing” to capture my attention, and that Vetter’s feelings about writing was similar to my opinion on writing. Through his wording and humor, I think Craig Vetter wrote the best essay. I find that the wording and presentation of an article or essay influences my opinion of the writer, and it affects how I receive the idea they are trying to present to me. Craig Vetter uses a blunt approach to convey his idea that writing is nearly impossible to teach, and describes writing as “A blood sport, a walk in the garden of agony every time out.”
Lady Gaga's Til it Happens to You, a song about the battle and survival of sexual assault, can be considered relatable to relationships. The music video portrays scenes in which young college students become the victims of sexual assault. We can see the victims being unable to connect with their peers leaving them feelings isolated and alone, unable to connect with anyone in the outside world. The effects of rape can be long lasting and victims may suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder, "an anxiety disorder resulting from a traumatic event that can have a debilitating effect on a person's quality of life" (Welch 365). This kind of trauma could produce strain on future relationships between significant others, friends, family and peers.
Beyonce is a very popular Artist who has really made herself stand out by her talented voice. She has gone through a lot of transformations in the music that she presents to the public. With Her album, “Lemonade,” was a huge hit which was critisizing and comparing her experience as a black women since she was a teen to the emotional stages she went through in her life as how she kind of brings fourth the feelings of emptiness and rejection she has felt. In her albums you can tell that she has always made music for a reason and cause, but not just for entertainment. When she was a teenager she joined her first group which was called the “Distiney’s Child which went throgh a lot of ups and down until it actually came in notice by a lot
Writing has always been an issue but yet interesting subject of mine. As hard as I try and write essays, and papers I just can’t get the hang of writing. But after taking this class, I did learn different writing technique and improved my writing proficiency, material body of formatting, and how to uncovering and properly use sources. Through class exams, essays, and a research paper, I was able to learn new writing skills. Although I have learned a variety of things, my writing still needs improvement.
