Ghettoside: A True Story of Murder in America In the book “Ghettoside”, Jill Leovy talks about black-on-black crimes, which is a very relevant issue today in the United States, blacks are suffering from the lack of effective criminal justice system, the lack of cooperation from the witnesses, and how sickening it is for a family to lose someone because of homicide. An officer named John Skaggs, who is the main protagonist of the story. Leovy described John Skaggs as compassionate and relentless. Skaggs would be assigned to solve the murder case of Bryan Tenelle, a son of a homicide detective named Wallace Tenelle.
The next chapter was Carrie McCandless viewpoint on traveling to see where her older brother Christopher McCandless died. When Carrie was in the helicopter flying to the ominous bus, she could not believe that Chris had backpacked through such terrain and lived off the land for one hundred days. However, she always knew that if Chris put his mind to something, he would always achieve it. Finally, she saw the rundown school bus where her brother had died. Prudence desires to become a scientist to stop the many illness and deaths she has seen. She gets a job as an assistant to a scientist and works to track down the Typhoid disease. It was being spread by a healthy carrier, Mary, who is too stubborn to believe she is spreading the disease. This job takes Prudence through many journeys like her first love and a terrifying court trial.
The novel, Dumplin’, was written by Julie Murphy, and tells a story of the success that can come from stepping out of one’s comfort zone. Dumplin’ was published as a Young Adult novel in 2015 by Harper Collins, and the title is a nickname for the main character, Willowdean Dickson, given by her former beauty queen mother. The novel takes place in Texas, and incorporates copious amounts of southern charm complete with Homecoming Mums, hair teased to high heaven, and southern accents of course. The rich have a nice happy ending getting buried in the ground on the other hand the poor have to be stacked up in boxes in the air. In the case of the story called “Teenage Wasteland” a boy named Donny is influenced by external input therefore changing his attitude and actions toward certain people.
D.W. Laist research claims that the polluted gyre affects 267 species worldwide: 86% of all sea turtle species, 44% of all seabird species, and 43% of all marine mammal species. Oesophagus and stomach contents of the endangered green sea turtle were examined from 38 representatives, 23 of which (60.5%) had swallowed debris, especially plastics. Scientists have documented 6 pounds of plastic for every pound of plankton in this area (“Plastic Ocean - The Great Pacific Garbage Patch”). Most of this plastic is eaten by sea birds and animals, including turtles and albatrosses. Sea turtles often eat plastic bags instead of jellies.
Due to the negative effects caused from plastic it will always play a role in our environment. One hundred different chemicals have been created after the 1950s to the current day. Something people do not realize is that throwing a plastic wrapper on the ground will end up in a birds stomach, burning plastic in a fire will end up in the air we breathe, and recycling plastic will end up back in our homes. The short story “Teenage Wasteland” by Anne Tyler is about guilt and reveals mother’s feelings towards her children. A loving mother will feel guilty for anything that happens to her children, and even for that how they feel. Mothers is the person who cares the most about her child. The story “Teenage Wasteland” tells about a common situation many families experience: a misunderstood child creates problems to his parents, not by fault, but because he feels unwanted.
Everyday people buy plastic things from the cafeteria, from plastic containers, lids on cups, and things as small as straws, and like 50% of plastic used it will be thrown away after one use. However, do you ever stop and think, what happens to the plastic? If you’re thinking that it just magically goes away you 're wrong. It will most likely end up in a landfill somewhere or in the ocean, and as you may think that your actions do not impact the world, think again. Everyone in the world has at least used one piece of plastic, adding to the problem of plastic pollution and helping certifying the terrifying statisticc that acooording to the 2018 Earth day video, “by 2050 there will more plastic in the ocean than fish”, which almost is impossible to think of.
