The novel, Dumplin’, was written by Julie Murphy, and tells a story of the success that can come from stepping out of one’s comfort zone. Dumplin’ was published as a Young Adult novel in 2015 by Harper Collins, and the title is a nickname for the main character, Willowdean Dickson, given by her former beauty queen mother. The novel takes place in Texas, and incorporates copious amounts of southern charm complete with Homecoming Mums, hair teased to high heaven, and southern accents of course. As word spreads that Willowdean, an unlikely candidate, is entering the pageant, many other outcasted girls are inspired to participate . The outcasted girls had considered participating in the pageant, but were secretly waiting for someone to sign up first. Therefore, when Willowdean signs up, they decide to join her. During preparation for the pageant, Willowdean befriends the outcasted girls and starts to enjoy the events leading up to the pageant.
