In general ethical behavior involves being accountable, using good judgment, abiding by laws and respecting the rules of one’s profession. In providing a health-related service, workers are encouraged to follow the guideline Above all else do no harm. This phrase is taken from the Hippocratic Oath made by nurses and doctors. It provides a powerful reminder for energy workers to not knowingly do anything that will cause harm to clients. Janet Mentgen would sometimes reflect on the two types of errors committed in nursing. The first type was an error of commission, which is when something is done incorrectly. The second type was an error of omission, when a nurse failed to do something needed for the care of the patient. Her goal was to shrink the cysts. She knew the size of the cysts because of an ultrasound test. She came in for four Saturday morning treatments. She also agreed that she would do some visualization of the cysts shrinking when she was at home. At each Saturday morning appointment she smelled of alcohol, which was still leaving her system from the night before. At the fourth session I talked to her again about self care. I suggested that decreasing her intake of alcohol might improve her body’s ability to heal the cysts, since the body had to do the added work of detoxing the alcohol. Her non-response gave the impression that she was not interested in giving up drinking. Then she told me the most recent ultrasound showed that the cysts were significantly smaller and that she was satisfied with the treatments. She made no additional appointments. I never saw her
