59% of people aged 18 to 29 say the internet is shaping who they are. “The Veldt” and “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury are two dystopian novels where technology has become a major factor in their life, destroying them by the day. “The veldt” is based in the future, where a family is given all the modern benefits of technology, claiming to make their lives easier and more efficient. For example, the kitchen makes dinner for all the family, allowing them to engage in other fun activities. However, with every good thing, comes bad.
Nicholas Carr wrote this essay to let the upcoming generations know about the danger effect of the Internet overuse by using ethos, logos, and pathos and also some other rhetorical strategies. He starts his essay with a scene that was takin by Stanley Kubrick’s A in 2001: A Space Odyssey at the end of the paragraph saying, “I can feel it.’’ And after that he started his next paragraph with the same words, “I can feel it.’’
In 1987, Wendell Berry published his article “Why I am Not Going to Buy a Computer” in the journal New England Review and Bread Loaf Quarterly. In it, Berry encourages us to be less hooked to the energy corporations, yet he focuses specifically on technological innovation. Accordingly, Berry starts the article by mentioning that he uses two methods to avoid overusing the energy corporations' newest tools. The first method is to work with a piece of paper and a pencil or pen; however, he also acknowledged to had asked his wife to type his work on a typewriter. The second way is by welcoming his wife to his work since she has a crucial role in editing it.
I partially disagree with the last statement because although I do recognize that we are becoming more dependent on what our computers can do, there are some aspects in which a computer can totally fail but a human wont. A Computer can provide you with outstanding amounts of information that anyone may require to complete a task, but no one should expect the computer to do all the job, it is only a tool that provides us with some of the means to achieve a goal, the rest will depend on human help. One good contradiction to this is the fact that some people will preffer to speak to a machine rather than a human, but that problem should not only be blamed on computers but rather the way in which one develop and performs
As technology improves, so do human capabilities of altering nature, which in turn creates increased responsibility. This directly relates to genetic engineering, which is beginning to morph into a reality. There are advocates for both sides that convey their personal opinions about the hypothetical results, but neither is clearly superior since both arguments speculate upon an unknown future. Hungarian psychologist, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, outlines this topic in his essay “The Future of Happiness,” which focuses on the history of selective breeding and compares the goal of happiness with genetic engineering. Csikszentmihalyi alternates between viewpoints regarding genetic engineering but presents a perspective dominated by warning.
“What would we do without the internet?” a phrase coined by a generation that has become accustomed to this new technology. If you look back not even twenty years ago, most people were still just learning about what the internet was, while today everybody has a facebook, twitter, or an email account. This massive shift that came about from such a brilliant invention happened quickly, and Malcolm Gladwell and Nicholas Carr look into how the internet has changed us as people and as a civilization in just a couple of decades. Just how did we as a society become so dependent on a technology that has, for the most part, become the center of our daily lives, and what are the potential drawbacks of that dependency?

At the end of the excerpt, Kingwell discusses happiness, even unhappiness, and concludes with his own opinions on the subject. Since the beginning of human existence, people have tried to define happiness, but no one has described it sufficiently, which means the search continues.
