Old, lonely ladies like Adela Strangeworth could suffer from boredom. One would also think that she would probably like to work in her yard. And one could even think of her living in a small town, where she would probably also know all of the people. If one visualizes all these clichés when an old lady was mentioned, one now has a pretty good picture of Miss Adela Strangeworth, the protagonist of the short story, “The Possibility of Evil’’ by Shirley Jackson. Miss Strangeworth is 71 years old and lives in a small town.
In “The Possibility of Evil” by Shirley Jackson, Miss Strangeworth has lost her sanity and she is evil in some ways. She tells people everything they do wrong in the town that she believes is hers. She knows everyone in town, “I’ve watched my town grow” Jackson states (Jackson 188). She is old enough to have knowledge about everyone in the town, and she hasn’t left this town in her whole life. She also isn’t very humble.
Barbara Cage once said, “A grandma is warm hugs and sweet memories. She remembers all of your accomplishments and forgets all of your mistakes.” In ‘The Secret of Sarah Revere’ by Ann Rinaldi, Grandma Revere is the complete opposite of the kind-hearted grandma that makes you cookies. She is strict and disrespectful to all her grandchildren. In the novel the narrator Sarah Revere will do anything to get away from her sister Debbie and their grandmother.

Using an informal style and easy grammar minimized confusion and allowed readers to visualize themselves as Shepard better, thus persuading them to take her side. Shepard’s narrative approach, opposed to an academic journal, adds a personal touch that lessens the abrasiveness. For example, paragraphs 15 and 16 introduced the idea of grades being based on effort. Had this idea been presented in a blunt statement (Grades should not be based on effort and hard work doesn’t make up for natural talent) many readers would find the tone too harsh and not care to listen to the rest of the argument.
In the short story “The Possibility of Evil” written by Shirley Jackson the main protagonist, Miss Adela Strangeworth demonstrates multiple traits of her complex personality through her actions, thoughts and the way she communicates. A couple of these traits that are significant to her character are insensitivity and masquerading. Imagine an insanely insensitive person who does not care how others feel. Meanwhile on the inside she is evil and thinks she is at the top of the town’s hierarchy. In fact she has a god complex. Miss Adela Strangeworth, a character in the short story “A Possibility of Evil” by Shirley Jackson, is a 71 year old who is thought by the townsfolk as a sweet puny lady but she is nothing but that. Because of the way Miss Strangeworth is, all horrible actions must have a consequence and she finds out the truth of that statement when her vintage old self turns into the evil lady that no one has seen before, and she realizes that she wants more control than she has, basically a god complex.
I chose to write about Chapter 10 of the textbook We The People, Tenth Essentials Edition and The White House website for this assignment. The life of the First Lady and the role she plays in the government interests me. Usually, history books focus on the president and do not talk about his wife. This role has changed over time, from the first First Lady (Martha Dandridge Custis Washington) to the current First Lady (Melania Trump). For example, Mrs. Washington did not live in the White House; the second First Lady was the first to live in the White House, and all First Ladies have lived there since.

Keeping the reader’s attention through your essay is important because you want your reader to stay interested in the essay and not get bored and stop reading. In Roxane Gay’s “A Tale of Three Coming Out Stories”, she uses multiple techniques to keep her reader’s attention. When you are writing, use different techniques such as, emotion and examples/evidence to your argument.

In the book Girl, Interrupted, by Susanna Kaysen, one of the biggest focal points is mental illness. Mental illness can be tough to talk about, simply because the phrase “mental illness” encompasses such a wide range of conditions and conjures up images of deranged people, but it is very important, especially in this book. There is a certain stigma that people who are put into mental hospitals because they have medical problems or are insane and a possible danger to society. While this is sometimes true, it is far more common for patients to need help for a disorder, but just don’t know where to go or what to do, and can end up putting themselves or someone else in danger.
Many critics agree on one fact about Canadian author Alice Munro: one of her most notable qualities in regards to her work is the distinct use of realism in her writing. Her writing provides a strong sense of familiarity to the reader, while also containing stronger metaphorical meanings that one can note when they begin to closely look at her work. Her short story “Boys and Girls” portrays the socialization of a young girl, once very close to her father and unaware of any sort of gender bias within her society, into a young woman with a pessimistic view of femininity and her expected position in society. This story shows the socialization process in a way that makes it easy to recognize, illustrating circumstances that the reader can notice the blatant sexism and misogyny; however, its portrayal is extremely realistic, allowing the reader to recall how oblivious they may have been in the past during times that they have been impacted by social biases in our world. Critics of Munro typically agree on her overall theme of femininity and coming of age in her writings; “Boys and Girls” emphasizes the ways in which young girls are socialized into a seemingly natural understanding of the sexist expectations and gender roles.
There are many reasons why I want to be a social worker. When I was young, my family went through some traumatic changes. To help me cope, my mother sent me to see the school social worker. I spent loads of time in a social worker's office for most of my life so I’ve been lucky to have a firsthand experience with the work done by social workers. I’ve seen the changes and differences that are made in people's lives and I want to be a part of that.
Vincent Van Gogh, a famous Dutch painter, lived with bipolar disorder for the majority of his life and despite his mental illness, he still produced many famous paintings, one of his most known is The Starry Night. Although many people have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, they can still live the life they want to live with proper treatments. Bipolar disorder is defined by the National Institute of Mental Health as a “brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out daily tasks” (“Bipolar Disorder in Adults”). In Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights, Cathy Earnshaw is described as a spirited and strong willed young child, often getting in trouble. During her adolescent years she kept the same sense of sauciness, but her moods are more varied now: she displays “...seasons of gloom…” as Nelly describes them (Bronte 100).
Comparing Boys and Girls and Emma Watson’s speech for her HeForShe campaign Gender is not referred “to sex, but to this set of prescribed behavior,” as said by Marlene Goldman’s “Penning in the Bodies” (Goldman). There are many rules set upon an individual as to what is acceptable and what is not. The short story Boys and Girls by Alice Munro focuses on the implications the narrator had to endure on her journey to womanhood by reason of gender stereotypes. Emma Watson’s speech for the HeForShe campaign targets on abolishing gender inequality. Despite inequity, there is a myriad of comparable traits that are shared by humans which portrays our personality.
