In Jane Jacobs’ book The Death and Life of a Great American Cities, she talks about what types of structures work in cities, and what types of structures do not work in cities. She has many concepts that she talks about throughout the book that mentions what is beneficial to cities. Cities across the country are all shaped and organized so differently that they each have their own significant characteristics that make each standout. For example, the city of Philadelphia has parks that are spread out evenly throughout the city that are all fairly popular, such as Rittenhouse Square. Nearby these parks is Temple University, and those that attend Temple feel like the campus is a city of its own within North Philadelphia. Temple University’s campus stands out …show more content…

Templetown does not have playgrounds around campus but has areas that you could consider parks. They are just plots of grass, plazas, and seating for Temple students to relax. Unlike what Jacobs says I believe that these parks are positive for Templetown. In the areas off-campus the playgrounds and parks meant for local children are rarely used, although the on-campus areas designated as “parks” are flooded with students. If a day comes where it is warm out you can expect hundreds of students to be outside near the bell tower hanging out on the grass doing homework, tossing a ball around, or just hanging out with friends. Or you can see students sitting at tables in O’Connor’s Plaza working on homework and enjoying the warm beams of the sun. Even when it is cold out you can see people bundled up waiting in the plaza for their next class to start or enjoying a warm cup of coffee. The point is that Templetown provides areas that can be considered parks for college kids and they are used regularly, giving them a purpose in the community and making them a positive aspect of
