I used snipping tool to screen grab the image and using a Windows computer I just changed the contrast and the brightness of the image. The Spring Festival Along the River Scroll illustrates an interesting narrative over travelers and other people’s lives. Although there are many points of the scroll where something interesting is happening (due to the realistic details), I could not help feel very connected to the image that I had screen grabbed. It is a great depiction of what Lynch and Schaefer discuss in the readings. In “The City Image and its Elements,” Lynch explains that there are five contents of a city that are “the predominant elements” (479). There is a path being taken by a massive amount of people from all walks of life engaging in the city market atmosphere. It is a large area and there are many occurrences. There are people purchasing items, riding donkeys, or walking on the bridge to get to enter the market or head to another area closer to the boat on the right. I screen grabbed the boat because it is another Path, a transit where there are men on it. It seems they are there for the market. The image also captures Lynch’s idea of edges because there are boundaries, such as the bridge being a key element in separating the central market and the area where the boats and other buildings are located. It is able to separate the commerce and the transportation. One is also able to see the outline of the busy city. As I mentioned in a literal sense it is a district, specifically a commerce one because there are people interacting with one another and there are little stands that look like they are selling items. Also, boats are usually located or being directed to an area where marketing occurs. As Lynch mentions, “the observer mentally enters ‘inside of’” the city and this is true with the image. One can also see inside of some buildings on the bottom-right. Nodes is also viewed in the image because of everything occurring is connected to the central market that is occurring.
