The article that I read was Dying Gaul Is a World Masterpiece About Death by Jerry Saltz. While I was reading the article, the type of analysis that I got from it dealt with formal theories. I decided to go with that analysis because Saltz talked about the style of the piece by how he mentions about the many parts of the piece that make it up. For example, he talked about the sword being by the hand of the man lying down on the ground, and the way the man was positioned on the ground. He also talked about how there was a wound to the body. Saltz explained everything he observed on the Dying Gaul. Another reason that this is formal analysis is by how the author talked about when the piece of artwork was made. To be specific, he said that the …show more content…

He talks about the size of Dying Gaul, the sword, the way the head was looking at the ground, the way the body was positioned, and how he is bleeding from a wound. He also describes it as people see the piece as a Roman Interpretation, but he sees it more Greek. He uses analysis by talking about how the medium is bigger than the size of an actual human, and all of the detail that is involved with the artwork (the sword, the wound, head tilted downward, ect.). For example, I like the attention to detail; the sword on the ground, the wound on the chest, and the facial expression all came together to make it a truly amazing composition. I agree with everything he has to say about it. For example, I can understand how he says the piece was made to commemorate Hellenistic wins from defeating the Gauls. I also like how he supported everything he talked about with some explanation. When he said that everyone thinks the piece is Roman, but he talks about why the piece is more Greek. The aesthetics that Saltz uses are good by how everything makes sense, and doesn't seem to be degrading of the artwork; he is actually explaining it. I like how the piece is made bigger than a regular sized human because it gives emphasis on the artwork. With the overall quality and detail of the work, it showed me that the artist had a good intent for making the
