In the book, Murder in the Bayou, Ethan Brown takes the reader through the murky waters of Jennings, Louisiana as he recounts the gruesome history of eight female murders known as the Jeff Davis 8. With police records and witness accounts, Brown uncovers that the murders are anything but your regular killings. Instead, Brown hints at a unnerving and inappropriate relationship shared by The Jennings Police Department and Jenning’s street hustlers and drug dealers. According to Brown (2017), “The Jennings Police Department and the Jefferson Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office shared a long and deep history of corruption” (p. 45). According to Brown (2017), Richard is still a known suspect for the murders of Whitney and Kristen. Richard, throught the book, it was always seemed that no matter what self incriminating statements he made, he always seemed one step ahead of the law by his constant dropped charges of rape and murder. According to Brown (2017), “It invites the conclusion that in exchange for information -- local law enforcement provides him cover”, (p. 140). Brown (2017) adds that he learned Richard was given a key to the taskforce office, and was seen letting himself in and out on multiple occasion. This acess likely allowed him to get away with the murder Whitnei. An inmate from Ewing's tapes claims Chaisson told her Richard got aggressive that night from being high on crack. Richard asked for a sexual favor from Whitnei and she refused. According to the inmate, Frankie started to beat her and “Hannah held her head back and drowned her” (Brown, 2017, p. 101). Brown (2017) says Richard was described as blacking out and doing heinous things when he was under the influence. Richards towards the end of the book had claimed that he had quit drinking and and doing drugs and had severe depression. For some of the victims, I believe that they were with Richards at the wrong time when he was under the influence, and ended paying the price for a good
