In the poem “Exclosure” the poet Amanda Jernigan, is trying to convey the message that writing is a process of capturing the reader, but oftentimes the composition is distorted by different perspectives. The use of imagery shows how the speaker conveys the message that writing is a process meant to secure the reader but can be mistranslated.

Imagery is used to explain how writing is a process, the speaker clearly understands that to write a good piece it takes time and dedication, much like growing a tree, “on birch and alder, apse and var” (5). The process to grow a strong well developed tree it takes a lot of nurturing, including feeding it with water and sunlight. Similarly, writing takes time too and takes a lot of dedication from the writer to create a strong composition. Typically, during the process of writing there is a rough draft that is revised, and often times the good copy has a very different outcome then the first draft, “and so completely to revise one’s subject” (6-7). Chicken wire is often eletrical and a driven post is typically buried deep in the ground, therefore speaker is trying to convey that when a person is reading a piece they are typically captured into the composition and unable to leave. The speaker knows that while reading a good novel the reader is generally immersed into the story, “knowing how words are wont to browse” (4). The speaker is trying to relay the message that words are a habit of learning and reading, and when a person is reading a novel they are growing or developing with the story. “I follow the runs of snowshoe hare that go along the fence-line here” (9-10).
